THE ORIGINAL IDEA FOLLOWED FROM SOME WORK I DID IN THE LATE 1980S, EARLY 1990S

I was involved in some research into the materials used, at that time, for many of the most common flat roofing systems. In particular, how and when these materials, and systems, failed. Initially, I knew quite a lot about materials and nothing about flat roofs. That would change.

It was an important question because failures of flat roofing systems had been identified, by the then DoE, as a major cost to the UK economy.

As a part of this research I identified a number of techniques that might possibly be used to both test in-situ, and to help to quantify the performance, of the most common systems.

Later, I wrote the original UK Specifications for ‘Electronic Testing’ of roof systems, initially for the Department of the Environment and CIRIA, then, after that, for the relevant Trade Body at the time,  the BFRC or, British Flat Roofing Council.

After a few years spent learning just how different the Academic and Commercial worlds were (still are) I set up the first company in what would later be the BDAS group of companies, Building Performance Consultants Ltd. This later evolved into Building Diagnostics, and thereafter into BDAS.

We have been working away ever since.

In that time I’ve trained many people to test flat roofs. In turn, some of these people trained others, and, of course, other ‘Testing Companies’ appeared. And sometimes disappeared.

But we are still here.

Our 'RoofScore' analysis suite is unique, one-of-a-kind. No one else has our pedigree or specialist technical knowledge. Most of the time that’s not too important, as long as the person doing the test is competent. But sometimes it is important, and that’s when having someone on-hand who REALLY understands the physics, and the systems, and the materials and their performance, can make a VERY BIG difference.
